tts, July nth, 1767, anddied February 23d, 1848. He began hispolitical life at a very early age, accom-panying Francis Dana, the ambassadorto St. Petersburg, as secretary, whenbut fourteen. In 1803 Adams waselected to represent Massachusetts inthe United States Senate, but was notreturned in 1809, because he upheldJeffersons Embargo Act, which wasrepugnant to his Federalist constitu-ents. He afterwards held many im-portant positions under Madison andMonroe, was chairman of the commit-tee to negotiate peace after the War of1S12, was minister to London, and Sec-retary of State. Two years after his Presidentialterm of office expired, he was electedto represent his district in the Houseof Representatives. This position heheld during the remaining years of hislife. Here he acted independently,considering it a duty imposed uponhim by his peculiar position, inasmuchas he had spent the greatest portionof his life in the service of the wholenation, and had been honored withtheir highest trust.
