the flag and his sword near himduring his last moments. In June, 1884, he married Miss Ida M. Stearns, ofIndianapolis, an accomplished young lady, a teacher inthe public schools in that city. She, at this writing, is atthe East, intending to spend two davs at The Weirs, inorder to see some of her husbands old comrades, of whomshe has heard so much in connection with his militaryexperience. Larry Foley, first lieutenant of Company C, is toomodest at this date, to furnish any personal for theEighth history, so we are not to be blamed for affrofriat-ing- something from the history of the First Regiment,page 241 : Larry Foley was promoted from the ranks and wasa good representative of the rollicking Irish troops; asbrave as a lion in action and as tender as a lamb whensentiment required. There was no danger of dving offatigue or overwork when he was around, for his presenceacted like electricity and his jokes and quaint sayingsrelieved many a wearv hour on the march, on picket, orin camp.

COL. J. M. LANDERS. New Hampshire Volunteers. 561 Gen. W. H. Emory was born in Maryland, in 1811,and graduated at West Point in 1831. He was in theMexican war on the stafT of General Kearney, when hewas made captain and remained with the army after thatwar; was in Kansas during the troubles in 1854, and inUtah in 1858; was appointed lieutenant-colonel of theSixth United States Cavalry in May, 1861. He was inthe Peninsular Campaign and was made brigadier-general of volunteers, March 17, 1862. His long servicehad well prepared him for his present position, and hewas regarded as a veritable old war horse. He wasthoroughly loyal and uncompromising, not wrapped up inself-conceit, and not addicted to whims or eccentricities ofany sort. He was a strict disciplinarian, but not an arbi-trary stickler in trifling matters, and ready to commendmerit whenever he saw it.
