gross exaggeration to say that America has democra-tized Europe; but certainly American stability under populargovernment had some effect on the outside world, and at allevents we can scarcely know ourselves if we do not realize thatthe world has become in many respects like ourselves. When American soldiers by thousands and tens of thousandscrossed the ocean in British ships to disembark at a Britishport on the way to France to fight against military autocracy,we saw one of the most dramatic facts in history. Americawas coming back to Europe to aid the cause of democracy.Mere inherited suspicion of a country against which the UnitedStates fought a hundred years ago must not blind us to the factthat the really great thing in the world is friendly cooperationand the general development of civilization; and the thing whichgives us hope is that other nations, Great Britain not less thanany other, are now based on faith in the people, which is the basisof democracy.
