Moreover, he so far subdued all the yet uncivilized barbarianpeoples who inliabit Germany between the Rhine, the Vistula, the sea,and the Danube, and resemble one another in speech, but differ widelyin manners and customs, that they paid him tribute; especially theWilzi, Sorbs, Abodriti, and Bohemians, against whom he carriedon war, while he accepted the submission of the rest, who are farmore numerous. Einhard certainly exaggerates somewhat, unlesshis undue extension of some of the boundaries is to be attributed to the vagueness of his ideas of geography. But it is certain that neversince the fall of the Roman Empire of the West had so vast a domainbeen united under one ruler; and Charlemagnes contemporarieswere right when they viewed his monarchy with amazement as oneof the worlds great empires.
