t property on the Central of Geor-gia. Capt. Williamson was presentand denounced this statement as afalsehood. Correspondence transmittedthrough the hands of friends failedto bring an understanding, and theyagreed to fight it out with pistols atthe Alabama line. A boundary linewas convenient because duelists couldoften step from one state into anotherand avoid arrest; incidentally, thiswas the last duel fought under theold style in the South. That the duel was not fought onthe line was due to the vigilance ofGov. Seay and Gov. Gordon, who keptthe wires hot until a number of posseshad been formed along the border. They fought at the point of least re-sistance after several harrowingchases by the authorities; this wasclose to the R. & D. tracks, betweenLawrence and Farill, Ala., on theFarill plantation, about three mileseast of the place where Forrest cap-tured Streights men in 1863, fourmiles west of the Georgia line and18 miles west of Rome.* 326 A History of Rome and Floyd County.
