We were getting lowerand lower, and just like a huge birdwith out-stretched wings we saileddown smoothly, without a bobble, land-ed in the upper end of the field, andlike the same big bird, hopped alongthe field, until two of the mechanicswho had signaled a safe landing ranup and swung themselves on thewings. ROME AS VIEWED FROM AN AIRPLANE. A daredevil aviator came buzzing over Rome in the spring of 1921. He was on his way toTexas and was willing to carry up a few passengers for the price of his gasoline. David A.Sparks flew and got some snaps. We see the Municipal Building, the business section. MyrtleHill Cemetery (in center), the wings of the plane and Shorter College through them, and lastly, the beautiful Etowah. 298 A History of Rome and Floyd County flight, and Sergeant Jones. The last-named pair landed at Towers Field, where they were received by City Com-missioner Ike May, with the keys ofthe city, and by a curious crowd. Theother machine encountered unfavorablewinds and was forced to land at King-ston, whence the remainder of the tripwas made by Maj. Churchill in an au-tomobile. Lieut. Blackler flew theplane to Rome on Saturday morningof the wedding, and although the at-mospheric conditions were unfavorable,he thrilled the bride with a series ofbarrel rolls over her apartments att
