Summary[edit]

Description
English: A GRISAILLE STUDY OF ROSES

SIGNED LUTF 'ALI, QAJAR IRAN, DATED AH 1247/1831-2 AD

Grisaille painting and pencil on paper, several flowerheads from a single clump, in various stages of opening, from bud to full bloom, laid down on an album page, framed and glazed Miniature 9 x 5 3/8in. (23 x14cm.)

Most of Lutf 'Ali's gul-o bulbul designs are executed in a markedly crisp manner, with very sharp outlines and almost pointilliste filling designs which are absent in the present drawing. The style here has echoes of the looser watercolour images painted by Sadeq dating from the end of the eighteenth century. There are however a few works by Lutf 'Ali which clearly follow this earlier looser tradition. One is illustrated in Aydin Aghdashloo, Aqa Lutf'Ali Suratgar, Tehran, 1977, p.158.
