Summary[edit]

Description Wonderful naive carving and inscription on a gravestone now mounted on the wall of St. Michael's church at Brentor. I've mucked about with it to bring up the contrast and render the inscription legible. I've done my best to decipher it, preserving the original orthography. I don't know if it reflects prevailing usage, local variation or the individual learning and inclinations of the sexton, or whoever carved it. My comments are in square brackets. The carver used colons to separate words within a line. I have used slashes to indicate line divisions.  ? indicates speculative rendering. Text: ?MeMontarii Mors [this could be either a rendering of 'memento mori' ('remember that you will die') or possibly something like 'this commemorates the death' in the local Latin] / HEARE VNder / This : stone: LYeth / the : body : oF : ?walter : ?batten / oF brinsabach [this place name survives in the name of a local farm] : who : was / bvried : APRIL : the : sixth : 1677 / Allso : ?Alce [maybe Alice] : his : WIFe : was / bvried : the : third : oF / desember : 1681. The carving of the leading words appear to be inspired by illuminated manuscripts, as do the carved decorative borders.
