march was soon followedby the Conquest of Canada. Coopers novel, The Last of the Mohicans, has for its plot andsituation the campaign at Fort William Henry. The story isvery exciting, and though highly colored, adheres closely to thefacts. The Red Indian as depicted by Cooper is a more romantic,emotional being than it is possible to consider him after readingParkmans description of his characteristics; but the painted figureseems better for a romance than the cold reality. The description of Fort William Henry in the novel is faithfulto the scene. Directly on the shore of the lake, and nearer to its westernthan its eastern margin, lay the extensive earthen ramparts andlow buildings of the Fort. Two of the sweeping bastions appearedto rest on the water, which washed their base, while a deep ditchand extensive morasses guarded its other sides and angles. Theland had been cleared of wood for a reasonable distance aroundthe work, but every other part of the scene lay in the green ■ J¥
