For these reasons thestatements mach about this region will proliably be sidjject to considerable futuremodification. The region may be divided faunally into three parts. These arethe southern region, the northeastern and the northwestern. The southern prairie region extends over the southeastern part of the state,west to the foothills of the mountains in Carbon, Sweet Grass and Jleagher coun-ties, and north al)out to the divide between the Yellowstone and Jlissouri drain-ages. The region is characterized by the regular occurrence of such species asthe Pinyon Jay, Western Lark Sjjarrow, Western Field Sparrow and Wlnte-winged Junco, and by the western limits of such eastern species as the Black-billed Cuckoo, Chimney Swift and Ovenbird. All thosementioned as characteristic of the southern prairie re.uion are lacking or rar^^here. The region differs from tlie northwestern (irairies by the presence of sage-brush and of the Sage Hen and perhaps other sage-loving species. It also differsin the rarity and perhaps entire lack of the Sprague Pipit and Baird Sparrow,these species being found both east of this region in North Dakota and west of itin the northwestern prairie region (Coues, 1874b, pp. 55n-r)(i:!).
