The Rock-Temples at Sela (Petra). (After a Photograph.) SEL SEL bishops are mentioned as late as A. D.536. Afterward, Petra entirely disap-peared from history, and remained un-knownfor thirteen hundred years. Since1807 it has been visited and described bymany travellers, of whom the most notedwere Seetzen (1807), Burckhardt (1812),Irby and Mangles (1818). The reportsof these early travellers seem almost asunreal as an Arabian tale, but later re-searches have shown that Petra wasreally one of the most wonderful citiesof the earth.
