The punishments seem to havebeen lighter than those of the Mosaic law,and very different in their relation to crimeand in their nature. Capital punishmentappears to have been almost restricted, inpractice, to murder. Notices of the Egyp-tian army in the O. T. show, with the monu-ments, that its most important branch wasthe chariot force.2 The horsemen mention-ed in the account of the pursuit of the Isra-elites by Pharaoh and elsewhere were prob-ably warriors fighting in chariots, who arecalled in Egyptian horse or cavalry.
