TIEPOLO (Giovanni Battista)(Venice 1696 1770 Madrid) 139* The Death of Sophonisbe* Sophonisbc, who has swallowed the poison sent to her byMassinissa, leans back in an armchair, in agony, her head lying on apillow. In her left hand she still holds the shell, that contained thepoison, while Massinissas letter announcing the deathsentence hasfallen to the ground beside her. Two lamenting women standbehind Sophonisbe. Under an archway stands a page, sorrowlylooking on the ground. Outside are seen the two messengers oi.Massinissa departing. Their faces express confusion.
