State. DENVER. Denver is the social and commercial centre, not alone of Colorado, but alsoof the outlying Territories, and is called the Queen City of the Plains. Itselevation is 5,170 feet above the sea-level. It is the gate to the mineral andscenic phenomena that have made the Rocky Mountains famous. In additionto its other advantages, it has a peerless climate, more conducive to outdoorenjoyment than any other known locality. It is situated on the plains at thefoot, and almost within, the shadow, of the Mighty Hills, which protect italike from the extremes of summer and winter weather. The streets are longand level, and on either side are rows of shade trees—nourished by streams ofrunning water—casting a shade alike upon the mansion and the cottage.There is not a paved street in the city, nor one in which the natural roadwayhas been improved, and there is no other city whose thoroughfares are assmooth and solid.
