English: A copper-alloy casket key of Medieval date 1100-1400AD.

The slightly bow sub-circular in plan and also circular in section. The stem is flattened-oval in section and increases in height towards the distal end. The tip is hollow, while the bit, set at the base of the stem, takes the form of a capital letter 'I'.

The length is 30mm, width 9mm, thickness 2mm, and the weight is 6g.

Several examples of similar casket keys were found in excavations in Winchester (see Biddle 1990: 1024-1036), in layers dating from the 12th to 14th centuries.
