Description

A cool moment in Nature during the day in the life of a conservationist:

Ramon Birkeland, Soil Conservation Technician, was out doing field work Ziebach County, S.D., for the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) South Dakota, when he spotted this beautuful spider and its web. Moisture in August isn't always available on the prairie but that day the dew was hanging on the web and this is what makes this photo unique. Birkeland was measuring and verifying a pipeline installation that a producer implemented as a water development under the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). The additional water will greatly help the distribution of livestock as they more evenly graze the native grasses and forbs across the pasture. These practices help the soil to be more healthy and allows rain to better infiltrate the soil profile which improves plant vigor and productivity.
