Summary[edit]
DescriptionA change of name at Trafalgar Square - geograph.org.uk - 1538982.jpg |
English: A change of name at Trafalgar Square This photograph was taken on the southbound Bakerloo Line platform at Trafalgar Square Underground station, just three days before the opening of the Jubilee line on 1 May 1979. On that day, Strand (Northern Line) and Trafalgar Square (Bakerloo Line) would both be re-named Charing Cross and would give interchange with the new Jubilee Line station of the same name. On the same date, the erstwhile Charing Cross stations on the District, Northern and Bakerloo Lines would all be re-named Embankment.
The photograph shows the new Charing Cross name, not meant to be unveiled until 1 May, already partly on show, while an adjacent poster explains it all to the public. Since that time, the Jubilee Line platforms named Charing Cross have closed, as the line has been re-routed from Bond Street southwards, via Westminster and Waterloo. |
