n I, and whilst there enjoyedthe friendship of Pope Julius II, and, it is said, of Raphael and Michelangelo ;left Rome in 1512 for Vlterbo, where he resided till 1520; he died 1528. Raphaels style of painting at one part of his Roman period, 1510-12 N 07 (the epoch of Carondelets visit), is so akin to that of the Venetian Sebastiandel Piombo, that some modern authorities, including Mr. Berenson, prefer toconsider this work to be by the latter artist. A portrait of Ferry Carondelet is also included in the Madonna andChild u.ilh Saints, by Fra Bartolommeo, in the Cathedral at Besancon. SeeGruyer in Fra Bartolommeo et Albertinelli, in Les Artistes Celebres Series,i886, p. 42. At least three portraits of Jean Carondelet were painted, notalily that byMabuse, now in the Louvre (No. 1997). B. Berenson: Venetian Painters of the Renaissance, 1906, p. 120. Exhibited at Burlington House, Old Masters, 1882, No. 160 ; also at theNew Gallery, 1893 4, No. 243. Lent by the Duke of Grafton, K.G.132 98
