Description
English: A cairn on the site of Hawkshaw Castle This cairn was erected in 1990 by descendants of William Porteous who was the Laird here in 1439. Hawkshaw Castle was a 15th century peel tower on the west side of the Hawkshaw Burn, but only a few stones of the tower base have survived. The cairn is approximately 1.8m high with a granite stone on top inscribed as follows:-

THIS CAIRN IS ON HAWKSHAW CASTLE SITE IN MEMORY OF WILLIAM PORTEOUS (LAIRD) 1439 AND THOSE OF THE NAME HOWEVER SPELLED WORLDWIDE

ERECTED BY THE PORTEOUS ASSOCIATES WITH KIND PERMISSION OF Mrs MARGARET MOFFAT

BARRY PORTEOUS, KINGSTON, CANADA LAIRD ELECT 9th SEPTEMBER 1990

The other side of the stone is inscribed:-

“PORTEOUSES FRAE NEAR AND FAR FAR AWA’ COME HERE TAE SEE WHERE ANCE STOOD THE CASTLE O’ AULD HAWKSHAW”
