is full, the sludgy shorescovered, the tide just on the ebb, and the sundeclining. Here it presents some of the mostremarkable of its sudden turns and windings,now making long, narrow promontories on thisside, and now on that, and washing in shortreaches, the bases of tremendous precipices ofbare, strangely-coloured rock. A little belowTintern, we passed under Banagor Crags, a long,lofty, perpendicular, and most sublime rampart,bare as a wall except where a few shrubs shootout,—opposite to which the river is skirted bynarrow slips of rich pasture rising into woodedacclivities, on which abruptly towers the Wynd-cliff, a nearly perpendicular mass of rock rudelyoverhung with thickets, stated to be eight hundredfeet high. At this place the Wye turns suddenlyround the fertile, smiling peninsula of Lancaut,having the stupendous amphitheatre of Pierce-field Cliffs on the right bank.
