chwe have been so long exempt. From the pleasant town of Ross we des-cended the Wye in one of the small row-boatskept for that purpose. A little below the town,on the right bank of the river, stand the ruinsof Wilton Castle. The manor of Wiltonwas given by the Empress Maud, to Milo Earlof Hereford. The present castle was built in114 J, and is mentioned by Geraldus Cambrensis.William Lord Grey (whose ancestors becamepossessed of the property by the marriage ofReginald Grey with Maud the daughter andheiress of Henry de Longo Campo,) had beentaken prisoner in defending Calais, and wasobliged to sell most of his estates to obtain hisransom. Accordingly in 1576, Lord GilbertTalbot then residing at Goodrich offered £6000for Wilton and its annexations, but it does notappear that he succeeded for Elizabeth daughterof Lord Grey de Wilton (who died in 1559) waswife of Lord Chandos, whose second son Charlesresided here, as well as James the MagnificientDuke, who built Cannons. The South Westtower appears to have undergone no change,when the other part of the building was alteredto the style of other castellated mansions of thefifteenth century. Leaving Wilton Castle, a iew yards lowerdown, the Wye passes under Wilton Bridge,the arches and piers of which are of curiousconstruction, and were first built at the end ofthe sixteenth century. At the time of ourpassage, which was early in the month of June,we found such a deficiency of water about two orthree miles below the bridge, that even our littleboat grounded. So far, and indeed for a mile ortwo farther, the scenery of the Wye, including theview of Ross, with its steeple, its terraces, andtrees, is only pretty and graceful; but, onapproaching Goodrich Castle, it becomes bolderand grander. On either side, the banks beginto rise into lofty precipices, or wooded hills, ofthe noblest forms ; and
