Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Vacancy (a pun on the word "Vaga", that can also be translated as "The Wave"): a cartoon by Manuel Gustavo Bordalo Pinheiro, published on A Paródia in 1901, satirising the situation of the casual vacancy in the Council of State following the death of the Count of São Januário; on a beach, two men in bathing suits (Pimentel Pinto and João Arroio) argue who's going to catch the approaching wave (despite the conflicts of interest, the vacancy would end up being filled by Pimentel Pinto); the Speaker of the Chamber of Peers, Luís Bívar, watches over the two on the upper right corner.
