^of Suffolk, April 12, 1786. While at Mattatuck, hewas married to Mrs. Elizabeth Barker, the widow ofhis predecessor, the Rev. Nathaniel Barker, by theRev. John Storrs, December 18, 1775. with whom,notwithstanding the great disparity in their ages, helived happily for many years. He was the first minis-ister upon Long Island, that refused to administerbaptism upon the indulgent plan. He was settled atBedford, N. Y., and afterwards at Deerfield, N. J.,August 12, 1795, and dismissed from feeble health in1805. In 1809 he returned to the State of N§w York,and died at Lysander, July 13, 1825. He had nochildren.—Primes His. L. Z, Allens Bio. Die. II I I m THE DAVENPORT FAMILY. 239 Ridge, Stamford, May 24,1749, and was married by theRev. Noah Wells, D. D., to Prudence Bell, daughter ofJesse Bell, of Stamford.^ She died December 23,1794, aged 43 years. Married 2d, to Sarah Gaylord,daughter of Rev. William Gaylord, of Wilton, August,1795. Mr. Davenport was both a carpenter and farmer—cultivating the lands of his native Ridge, and erectingdwellings, some of which, with the lapse of nearly acentury, are still standing in a fair state of preservation.He was one of the earl)^ members of the Congregation-al Church of North Stamford,f of which he was chosendeacon. May 8, 1796, and continued in that office tillhis death, February 6, 1820. Mrs. D. survived himand died Februaiy 11, 1846, aged 87 years. * Another daughter of Mr. Bell married Mr. Waterbury, thefather of Gideon Waterbury, of New York, who was the fatherof the Hev. J. B.
