13. Afterpassing two years at Merton, he removed to MagdalenHall, in the same University, where he remained ashort time, when he became a licensed minister. Afterofficiating for a few months as chaplain at Hilton Cas-tle, he removed to the metropolis and having perform-ed service for some five years in St. Lawrence Church, 48 SUPPLEMENT TO Old Jewiy, London, he was elected in 1624, vicar inthe neighboring Church of St. Stephens in Colemanstreet, where he became a minister of note. In 1G25, he returned to Magdalen Hall, and for sometime performed his exercise for the degree of Bachelorof Divinity, which he received, June 28tli of that year,and soon after returned to London, where he was es-teemed a person of excellent gifts in preaching andother qualities belonging to a divine. Here he labor-ed for some years, till becoming a decided non-conform-ist, he resigned his charge at St. Stephens in WSS,went into Holland, and after some time returned toEngland, and in 1()87 sailed for America.

John Daveiii^ort, the fifth son of Henry,by Winifred (Barnabit,) his wife, was born in the an-cient city of Coventry, Warwickshire, England, in 1597;and baptized in the Church of the Holy Trinity, (Rev.Richard Eaton, rector,) iVpril 9th of the same year. The stone font which then served for baptisms, thoughafterwards banished by Puritanical zeal, has been restor-ed to its use, and is still a conspicuous object in thebeautiful Gothic church, which stiU retains its almostunique stone pulpit constructed on one of the pillars ofthe nave. His father was a merchant (draper,) andlike his grandfather Edward, was elected to fill thehighest municipal offices of that city.
