N. for thegreat-grandfather and grandmother, and filledwith cider, graced the table. The guests, some-times to the number of thirty, assembled in thewestern parlor, and when dinner was announcedGrandpa rose from his large rocking chair, offeredhis arm to Grandma, and led the way to thedrawing room, to the middle of the long side ofthe table, facing the door. When the guests wereassigned to their places, everyone stood, whilethe clergyman beside my grandfather, usually Dr.Emerson1 in my girlhood, asked the blessing. Amoment more of silence, then the chairs weredrawn out, and as friends were seated, the merri-ment began.
