Ink, gold, gouache on paper 60 by 43.3cm

Persian mansucript on paper, 3 lines to the page, written in large nasta'liq script in black ink within cloud bands against gold grounds sprinkled with polychrome flowers, flanked by broad panels filled with leafy gold fronds, large illuminated headpiece with seal impression of Nasr al-Din Shah, ruled in gold, red outer borders, various seals to reverse

The content of this firman reveals the honour of the Qajar decoration of the 'Lion and the Sun', third degree, bestowed upon the French attaché 'Nicolas', from Nasr al-Din Shah Qajar (r.1848-96).
