Title
A Post Medieval lead alloy (pewter) syringe dating to 17th century.
Description
English: A Post Medieval lead alloy (pewter) syringe dating to 17th century. The syringe has a cylindrical barrel with an integral tapered blunt point with central perforation. At the opposite end the barrel steps out slightly to form a finger flange for grip. There is a separate cupped end cap which sits on top of the barrel and has a large central perforation for the plunger. The plunger has a ring thumb rest. The barrel is marked with three bands of engraved single lines around the body of the barrel; the middle band is double lines. There is no evidence of maker's marks.

Dimensions: diameter of barrel: 89.29mm; length: 172.28mm; weight: 83.92g.

There are several similar syringes on the PAS database, mainly found on the Thames foreshore. Dating evidence comes from a similar syringe found in the wreck of the Machault, which sank off eastern Canada in 1760 (Sullivan 1986, 87).
