Title |
A Post Medieval copper alloy key plate escutcheon (AD 17th century). |
||
Description |
English: A Post Medieval copper alloy key plate escutcheon (AD 17th century). The key plate has been cut from copper alloy sheet. There are four small rivet holes; one in each corner for attachment. There is a central key hole; a rectangular slot for the hasp clip; a further rectangular slot at 90º to the hasp clip slot and two circular perforations – one on each side, just above the key hole. The front surface is decorated with annular and crescent-shaped stamps forming an irregular pattern. The outside edge has been cut decoratively o form a symmetrical pattern. The presence of the slot for the hasp clip indicates this was a key plate from a lidded box.
Dimensions: length: 41.95mm; width: 31.83mm; thickness: 0.82mm; weight: 4.28g. Identification by Hazel Forsyth, Senior Post Medieval Curator, Museum of London. |
