Title
A Medieval Key (Locking)
Description
English: A complete copper alloy key (locking) dating to the Medieval period (c. AD 1300-1500). The object has a lozenge-shaped bow with rectangular knops at the top and bottom of the bow. Within the centre of the bow are five circular holes each with an internal diameter of 3.2mm. On the corner of the bow opposing the shank is a circular collar. After the bow and before the shank is an uneven border. From this border the hollow, circular shank extends terminating in the bit. The bit is one piece and sub-rectangular in shape. There is one horizontal groove at the top and two horizontal clefts at each end, the top one measuring the width of the groove. There is one vertical slot which runs centrally along the edge of the bit.

The overall dimensions are as follows: 96.9mm in length, 34.4mm in width, 15.4mm in thickness and 50.9g in weight.
