Title
A Medieval copper alloy strap end
Description
English: A Medieval cast copper alloy composite strap end dating from 1270-1400 AD. The strap end is circular in plan and is formed of one pierced plate with a decorative knop on top, with a separate plate attached on the reverse below the knop by two rivets. There does not appear to be a spacer in between. The front plate is a decorated around the central pierced opening, creating a crescent shaped plate, which would have left the strap visible in the centre. It has an incised border and further incised angular decoration. The central decorative knop that projects from this plate appears to be moulded with feather or foliage decoration and half of it is missing. The back plate is undecorated. Similar strapends in Egan and Pritchard date from ceramic phases 9 to 11 or c.1270 – 1400. There is not an example with a crescent shaped front plate. The strap end is 41.6mm long, 29.6mm wide and 3.7mm thick and weighs 12.6 grams. A similar strap end can be seen on the database: SWYOR-1BE5C6
