Description

Norton, Moses. A Draught Brought by Two Northern Indians Leaders Calld Meatonabee & Idotlyazee of ye Country to ye Northward of Churchill River [facsimile]. [1:5,068,800]. In: John Warkentin and Richard I. Ruggles. Manitoba Historical Atlas : a Selection of Facsimile Maps, Plans, and Sketches from 1612 to 1969. Winnipeg: Historical and Scientific Society of Manitoba, 1765, p. 90. As reproduced by, Winnipeg: Historical and Scientific Society of Manitoba.

Sometime between 1765 and 1769 two leaders of the Northern Indians reported to Moses Norton at Churchill Fort on the geographical characteristics of the northern regions tributary to this trading post. These concepts were sketched and dispatched to the Company in London. On this map Norton inserted information from his own experience, particularly as to the relative distances along the Bay coast, and the shape of Chesterfield Inlet, which he had himself navigated earlier. The farthest river to the north along the coast is the Coppermine river, and the great lake marked with an X would be Great Slave Lake, as shown by its size, shape and position. This map is not particularly significant for the mapping of Manitoba, but it does show the relationship of the Churchill river country to the territory of the Barren Grounds Indians, who traded at Fort Churchill. Again neither the right angle bend of the mainland coast, nor the great peninsulas separating Hudson Bay from the Arctic basin, are depicted. (Warkentin and Ruggles. Historical Atlas of Manitoba. map 34, p. 90)

Map prepared in black ink by R.I. Ruggles, from original manuscript (map G. 2/27) in the Archives, Hudson's Bay Company, London. Manuscript prepared in pencil on drawing paper. Drawn by Moses Norton from information by two Indians, Meatonabee and Idotlyazee.
