the general name of Arabs. Thegreater part of this district consists of nakedrocks and sandy and flinty plains; but it con-tained also some fertile spots, particularly inthe peninsula of Mount Sinai, and through thelong range of Mount Seir. The second region, or Arabia Deserta, isbounded on the north and north-east by theEuphrates, on the east by a ridge of mountainswhich separates it from Chaldea, on the southby Arabia Felix, and on the west by Syria, Ju-dea, and Arabia Petraea. This was more par-ticularly the country first of the Cushites, andafterward of the Ishmaelites; as it is still oftheir descendants, the modern Bedouins, whomaintain the same predatory and wanderinghabits. It consists almost entirely of one vastand lonesome wilderness, a boundless level ofsand, whose dry and burning surface deniesexistence to all but the Arab and his camel.Yet, widely scattered over this dreary waste,some spots of comparative fertility are to befound, where, spread around a feeble spring,of .
