She drank it slowly (andin silence) and at last, with a longsigh, set the cup in its little metalsaucer on the floor, rested her arms onthe edge of the hihachi and staredthoughtfully at the red coals. Was the funeral Buddhist orShinto? I ventured to ask after a fewmoments.
