| Description |
English: AWACS at work Contrails from an Airborne Warning and Control System aircraft at work over the geographical centre of Scotland.
This aircraft flew this patrol circle for much of the day maybe more as darkness falls early at this time of the year. The air was almost still and so the contrails persisted and only slowly slipped south in the very slight northerly winds. From its high altitude the AWACS can spot enemy craft and direct fighters to targets over a very large area, in this case, the central edge of Western Europe. Was Britain under attack? No, it was up there controlling an annually held big NATO exercise in which nearby RAF Leuchars plays a very large part. In the foreground is the yard of a local sand and gravel merchant with the company car park on the left and reclaimed items to the right. |
