Summary[edit]

Description

Apollo 11 Hasselblad image from film magazine 40/S - EVA. -Z footpad.
The NASA Special Publication 246, Lunar Photographs from Apollos 8, 10, and 11 (1971) has the following caption for this photo:

Loose surface material disturbed by the lunar module footpad can be seen piled along the left side of the footpad. Penetration of the footpad into the lunar surface appears to have been minimal. The gold foil wrapping seen on this and other portions of the lunar module is a thermal barrier designed to protect the spacecraft from excessive heat.

This photo was used in Figure 1-28 in the Apollo 11 Preliminary Science Report (NASA SP-214), 1969, which has the following caption:

The LM footpads were also photographed for later study of the surface mechanical properties. The foil wrapping provides thermal insulation. (NASA AS11-40-5926)

This photo was also used in Figure 4-13 (b) in the Apollo 11 Preliminary Science Report, which has the following caption:

Footpads of the LM. (a) The +Y footpad (NASA AS11-40-5920). (b) The -Z footpad (NASA AS11-40-5926).
