Part of this photo was used in Figure 2-18 (a) of the Analysis of Apollo 8 Photography and Visual Observations (SP-201), which has the following caption:

Crater rays. (a) Ray-excluded zones around probable impact craters (Apollo 8 frame 2869-G); (b) oblique view of craters Messier and Messier A. Note the zero-phase point directly below the craters. The Sun angle is 17° (Apollo 8 frame 2341-E).

The text of the Analysis refers to the figure as follows:

The classical example of ray-excluded zones is that of crater Proclus on the western rim of Mare Crisium. Rays from the crater Proclus extend in all directions except for a wedge to the west. A possible explanation is that the local topography is responsible for the existence of such a ray-excluded zone.
Two examples which support this interpretation are shown in figure 2-18 (a). In the left portion of the photograph, a bright-rayed crater is situated almost exactly on the rim crest of the crater Gibbs. The bright rays of the small crater are visible in all directions except where the paths coincide with the rim crest and the inner rim of the host crater. In the middle part of the photograph, a bright-rayed crater occurs on the rim of a larger crater, but far enough from the rim crest such that the relative height of the rim crest affects the rays in about one-third of the circle surrounding the small crater.
