Description
English: Portland Canal at L&I Bridge.

"W.R. Holland Jr." upbound. Crewman with camera on bridge wing. . Twin screw towboat "W. R. Holland, Jr." (doc. # 641346, length 150 feet, breadth 45 feet, B&W (Burmeister & Wain) Alpha 12U28L diesels, 6000 hp, controllable pitch propellers [repowered in 2004 with GM 16-645E7B diesels, 6120 hp]). Built in 1981 by St. Louis Ship, St. Louis, Missouri. Originally named "Omega" and owned by Midland Enterprises, Inc., Cincinnati, Ohio. In 2000, renamed "W. R. Holland, Jr." In 2003, sold to Ingram Barge Co., Nashville, Tennessee. In 2005, renamed "Erna E. Honeycutt". Still operating in 2018.

The B&W Alpha marine diesel was a two-stroke valveless engine designed for relatively small ships such as fishing vessels and tugs.

There is a 1959.pdf history of the B&W company published in 1959 (25 MB PDF) which has color photos of B&W diesels and a few paragraphs on the B&W Alpha engine (pp. 10, 37).
