e inter-vening territory. A 4 line extends fromRedwood City to Palo Alto and StanfordUniversity, and this line also suppliedlarge quantities of gas to Camp Fremontduring the period of its existence. At the terminus of the 4 line extendedto the shipbuilding plant the pressure isreduced from approximately 50 poundsto the square inch to 6 water pressure.Five No. 00 Equitable regulators are em-ployed for this purpose. Each regulatordelivers gas through two meters, eachhaving a capacity of 3400 cubic feet perhour. The ten meters installed have theiroutlets neatly connected to a 10 weldedheader pipe. This header pipe is con-nected in turn to one 6 and one 8 pipeconveying the gas to two Selas systems,one having a capacity of 8800 cubic feetper hour and the other 25,000 cubic feetper hour. Tliis airmay be supplied at the point of flame, or,in the case of gas fuel, can be mixed priorto combustion. To obtain the localizedextreme temperature desired in many ap-plications the latter course is desirable.The superefiiciency, then, of a gas flamedepends to a great extent upon this mix-ing process. In large installations the saving in fuelthat can be effected by totally eliminatingthe human element in obtaining this mix-ture and substituting mechanical meansoftentimes justifies a large expenditure
