Russian soil chemist A.N. Goudilina was attending the First International Congress of Soil Science conference in Washington, D.C., June 13-22, 1927, when this photograph was taken by Watson Davis. She is probably aboard a cruise ship on the Potomac River, during the attendees' excursion trip to Mt. Vernon; she also participated, along with 205 other delegates, in the conference's Transcontinental Excursion, a thirty-day, 12,000-mile train journey, which made thirty-four stops for the study of soil regions and visited twelve agricultural experiment stations and various manufacturing plants.
