I am walking down Broadway on the Upper West Side, which I consider to be my "home neighborhood" in New York City. Even though I only lived here for four years, and have been gone for so long afterwards, it still felt as if I was born and raised in this very area. It is so nice to have places like this I can call "home" even when I am far from home. This is the supplemental entrance for the 96th Street Station, located at 93rd Street and Broadway. The green globes indicate that this entrance leads to a booth that is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so that I can pay fare or otherwise ask for assistance. Red lighting instead would indicate that the entrance is not staffed (I may need a valid MetroCard already), closed part-time, or exit only. (And speaking of home, 96th Street/Broadway will always be my home station in the New York City Subway system.) The original Interborough Rapid Transit system used trains that were five cars long, but in the 1950s, trains were lengthened to ten cars, and so were platforms. This gave the 96th Street Station this new entrance on 93rd Street. It also made the 91st Street Station redundant, and that station closed at the time; the closed-off, graffiti-covered 91st Street Station platforms can be seen from passing trains. Continental Airlines used to often advertise at this station, and I see that it is still the case, though as a result of airline industry consolidations, the name I now see is United. United's acquisition of Continental and its Newark hub turned it from a minor player into New York's largest airline overnight. I'm always happy to see United advertising in New York City, as flying United to New York City had clearly defined my early travel patterns (and I again used United for this New York visit). |
