Accession: 69-599-A-F Commemorative Medallion Apollo 8 1.5"Dia Apollo 8 was the first manned spacecraft to leave Earth's orbit and to take humans to the moon and back. USS Yorktown had a significant role in the mission as the recovery vessel. These medallions were made from metal carried into space by Apollo 8 and were given to staff who had assisted with the mission. The reverse of the medallion is inscribed, " In appreciation for your contribution to the Apollo Saturn Project. The Apollo 8 crew carried metal in this medallion on man's first flight to the moon."
