Description60163 Tornado passes through Newport station - geograph.org.uk - 1731521.jpg |
English: 60163 Tornado passes through Newport station Tornado passes non-stop through Newport railway station, platform 2, hauling the St David's Day Cathedrals Express steam special from London Victoria to Swansea.
I had naively expected Tornado to follow the same pattern as the previous steam locomotive to visit Newport (Bittern https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1606694 in December 2009) and stop at platform 1, seen on the right of the photo. Shortly afterwards, Gareth James took this excellent photo https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1730615 of Tornado at Cardiff Central station. Tornado was built at Darlington between 1994 and 2008. She is the first mainline steam locomotive built in the UK since 1960 (92220 Evening Star, the last steam locomotive built by British Railways.) Tornado was conceived as a modern version of the LNER Peppercorn A1 class, incorporating improvements probable had steam continued, including changes for cost, safety, manufacturing and operational benefits, while keeping the original design's appearance and sound. The 49 original Peppercorn A1s were built in Doncaster and Darlington for the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER), but all were scrapped by 1966 after an average service of only 15 years. None survived into preservation, so Tornado fills a gap in the classes of restored steam locomotives that operated on the East Coast main line. |
