Summary[edit]

Description
English: This archaeological discovery is now preserved in Hyderabad, Telangana.
  • Adinatha, also referred to as Rishabanatha, is the first Tirthankara in Jainism. The Jaina historical texts state that he lived millions of years ago.
  • In the above statue, he is standing in Kayotsarga posture. He has the "Srivastsa lanchana" on his right chest, and the "urna" mark on his forehead.
  • The museum curator estimates that this is from 4th or 5th-century CE (this is item 2003–278 of this state museum, and the label next to it dates it to these centuries). The item's simplicity and iconography, combined with the distinctive hair style suggests this is pre-6th century.
  • This elegant Rishabanatha statue was discovered during an archaeological excavation in Bapatla (Guntur district), along with many other Jain and Hindu items. It is well preserved and notable for being a cast statue. This implies that the Indian artisans were producing and the Jaina community was already patronizing cast idols by about the 5th-century (Hindu statues were also found).
