Summary[edit]

Description 49 Bond Street between Lafayette Street and the Bowery was built c.1830 and altered c.1882. The architect who designed it is unknown, but it was made in a combination of the Federal and Greek Revival styles. It was originally a 3 1/2-story single-family residence, but by 1880 had become a multiple-family residence. In 1882 the New York Free Circulating Library purchased the building, adding a full fourth story, altering the two bottom floors and adding an extension at the rear. When the NYFCL merged with the New York Public Library in 1901, the building continued in use as a branch library. In 1919, architect Henry M. Entlich reconfigured the building for stores and lofts, which later were put to use as small factories. By 1965, the building was in mixed residential and commercial use. The building is located within the NoHo Historic District as part of the 2008 extension. (Source: "NoHo Historic Distric Extension Designation Report")
