Summary[edit]

Description CSD Class 475 4-8-2 No.475 111 at Furth im Wald near the Czech border waiting to take over from DR Class 52.80 2-10-0 No.52 8195 on a Furth - Nurnberg - Pilsen 'Ascension Day' steam excursion run by the Frankische Museums-Eisenbahn, 5 May 2016. 147 Class 475's were built by Skoda 1947-50 for the CSD (plus 25 intended for the CSD but sold to North Korea instead). They were influenced by French (Chapelon) practice and their welded boiler with steel firebox was based on the SNCF 141R 2-8-2's. The boiler had a combustion chamber, thermic syphon, 2 arch tubes, and mechanical stokers. They had roller bearings on on all axles. The first 55 had Class 935 tenders and were initially hand fired but later converted to mechanical stokers. The remaining 92 (plus the North Korean engines) had Class 932.3 tenders and were fitted with mechanical stokers when built. The first 79 were complete with single chimneys, the remaining 68 (and North Korean locos) had Kylchap double chimneys (eventually fitted to the earlier engines). The Class 475's were fine performers, very reliable and very efficient, requiring little maintenance.
