Description 428-GX-K-126987: Newport News, Virginia. Elder statesmen Carl Vinson of Georgia attends the launching ceremony for USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), at Newport News Shipbuilding Company with two young admirers. The Vinson was the first U.S. Navy ship named for a living person since the 1820s. Photographed March 15, 1980. U.S. Navy Photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives. (2016/06/07).
