Description
English: The 400 block (north side) of New York Avenue, N.W., in the Mount Vernon Square neighborhood of Washington, D.C. – comprised of abandoned row houses located at 465 (center) and 471 (left) New York Avenue, N.W., and the Yale Steam Laundry Condominium complex, located at 437–443 New York Avenue, N.W., (background).

Except for the modern high-rise, all of the buildings pictured are designated as contributing properties to the Mount Vernon Square Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.

  • 465 New York Avenue, N.W. (also known as the Dr. Thomas Martin House)
    • Built by John C. Yost in 1902 (estimated cost–$12,500), following the designs of architect L. F. Stutz, the brick and stone, three-story, Romanesque Revival-style row house originally served as the residence and office of Thomas Martin (1854–1939), a prominent African American physician and one of the first graduates of the Howard University College of Medicine. The building was later converted into an apartment house, but has sat vacant for the past several decades. The building is slated to be restored for residential use, following its relocation to the western edge of Lot 0851. A high-rise condominium – an expansion of the Yale Steam Laundry Condominium complex – is planned for the site, but will incorporate the historic building.
  • 471 New York Avenue, N.W.
    • Built in 1870, the brick, two-story, Italianate-style row house previously served as Friedman’s Candy Store. Due to a lack of structural integrity, the building is slated for demolition, and will be replaced with a high-rise condominium – an expansion of the Yale Steam Laundry Condominium complex.
