Summary[edit]

Description
English: 40-42 High Street, Whitchurch. Unusual grade-II-listed shops by local architect William Webb, dating from around 1904. The first and second floors of both shops are decorated with iron arches and columns, cast at McFarlane's Glasgow works. The building was commissioned by W.C. Birchall, an ironmonger, whose premises originally occupied the left-hand part. The right-hand part was formerly the Alexandra Temperance Hotel, with a restaurant on the ground floor and billiard rooms above. The site was previously the location of Joyce's clockmakers. 36 and 38 High Street (left) date originally from 1677 and are also listed at grade II.
