Summary[edit]

Description
English: Cartoon in October 20, 1904 issue of Life magazine depicting Alton B. Parker, who supported the gold standard in the 1904 presidential election as the Democratic candidate (sending a telegram about that support), despite his previous support for free silver champion William Jennings Bryan. Parker is wearing a "Gold Standard" coat in the cartoon with patches showing his previous Bryan support. A nearby mule has "free trade" and "16 to 1" on it (the ratio that free silver advocates sought between silver and gold). Road sign in behind mule says "Washington 4-11-44 Miles"; 4-11-44 is a reference to gambling. Caption reads: "Miss Democracy" Its a nice coat, Parker, but it don't fit ye. Everyone can see them patches." See also https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015030140134;view=1up;seq=402
