Summary[edit]

Description
English: Abeilio GE Desiro on a Liverpool St to Colchester Town service. Network Rail Incident Response vehicle blocking the crossing. The half-barrier level crossing at Church St Kelvedon failed to operate correctly on the afternoon of 5th May causing disruption to both road and rail traffic. The problem led to the barriers remaining up whilst the red lights and sirens continued to operate, meaning it was not safe for road users to cross over. It is believed it was caused by a faulty treadle on the Up line closer to Rivenhall. A road user reported the incident to the Colchester signaller, resulting in the 14.23 departure from Kelvedon to Liverpool street approaching the crossing at walking pace. Having passed the Up line treadle, the crossing then reset; only to fail again a few minutes later after the passage of a Clacton-Liverpool street service. By this time, the Network Rail Response Unit had arrived on the scene and immediately blocked the highway with their vehicle for safety reasons – several drivers had previously risked their lives and those of train crew and passengers by attempting to cross the faulty crossing. Luckily an approaching Liverpool St – Ipswich service formed of Siemens Desiro unit 360 116 re-set the crossing mechanism, allowing the barriers to fall as a maintenance crew from Network Rail arrived and set off to check the faulty treadle mechanism. The delayed 13.34 Felixstowe-Lawley Street Freightliner service traversed the now-closed crossing at a crawl. Unusually, this train was headed by 66 534 “OOCL Express”. The service is normally booked for Class 70 haulage. Normal service was resumed some thirty minutes later.
